We Offer the Safe and Efficient Removal of all Redundant Equipment
We can project manage your entire decommissioning project.
Our service includes pricing the removal of all associated redundant equipment, physically dismantling it and loading assets onto transporters on site. We provide full methodologies, JSAs and engage approved third party contractors, alongside NZQA qualified staff, where needed.
With over 30 years in the energy industry, our highly experienced staff have extensive knowledge of substation environments around the country. They understand the local conditions, hazards and industry compliance requirements.
Smooth decommissioning projects depend on safety first. Prior to commencing the removal of any assets, all removed equipment is identified and proven to be de-energised and disconnected from any supply sources.
We ensure that all identified hazardous waste is handled by an approved or correctly trained person. Where applicable, traffic management is provided, to ensure public and staff safety.
All salvageable scrap materials are weighed and the docket is forwarded to the client within 48 hours of the asset being removed.
All waste material is removed from site and the site is swept clean. Where required, our service can include the reinstatement of floors or access ways.
Upon completion of works at each site, a report is provided with photos and details on the new current condition of the substation.
We can manage the full project for you and dispose of the whole network associated with the particular piece of equipment that you need decommissioning, from the overheads to the underground cables.
HEALTH AND SAFETY PROCEDURES
Health and safety compliance is at the forefront of our operations, with the following in place for every project.
Different organisations typically follow specific procedures for managing their unique environmental risks. We incorporate each organisation’s own environmental risk procedures into our own stringent risk management procedures.
We begin any project by first identifying hazards through a Risk Register Assessment. This is developed in conjunction with our client to ensure any additional health and safety procedures at an organisation level are also included in the Register.
Daily Hazard ID forms are produced every day and we have an onsite diary.
Job Safety Analysis and Reporting
Paperwork is produced around methodologies, along with Job Safety Analysis Sheets. All risks associated with a project are listed in detail, along with any associated risks relating to the actual work being undertaken.
We take environmental risk extremely seriously, from the initial onsite work, to post-decommission and disposal of materials. We make sure decommissioned products are disposed of in an environmentally responsible way.
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSD forms) also form part of our extensive job packs. Every day we have a site meeting before we start the job, where we list all hazards and tick every box. We make sure that JSAs have been read by every person in the work party and that every person involved in the project has a full and clear understanding of all health and safety requirements.
Photographic Evidence is Provided
Photos are taken before and after site decommissioning and included in the job folder.
A decommissioning project accumulates an extensive amount of documented information because everything related to health and safety and site compliance is recorded.
The contents of the project folder are readily available to our clients any time they wish to see it. Upon completion of the project, a full copy of all documentation is provided to ensure our client is fully compliant and covered for audit.
MEET GMR ENERGY PROJECT MANAGER, CARL WHITTINGTON
Carl has spent most of his working life working on, servicing and maintaining high voltage equipment.
Carl began his 30+ year career by working his way up from field staff, to supervisor and on to project management, when employed by Transpower’s main service provider.
Milestone projects included installing and maintaining Wellington’s first wind turbine in Brooklyn, overhauling/rebuilding large transformers for Transpower, reinstating and maintaining the total energy centre at Wellington hospital, and creating a workshop specialising in rebuilding transformers and circuit breakers for the distribution market and large industry.
Carl also operated his own company, catering for the requirements of the local power board. He routinely worked on their equipment and substations throughout the greater Wellington region, before joining GMR Energy.
Carl was involved with various contracts for GMR before joining full time. One of these was the dismantling of three of New Zealand’s largest transformers on site at Tiwai aluminium smelter. Most recently Carl project managed the removal of the overhead Trolley Bus Network for Wellington Cable Car. That led on to the removal of redundant equipment directly from Wellington Electricity substations. This project involved a detailed scope of works and processes, along with involvement of key subcontractors. Meeting the customer’s level of required confidence was pivotal to this project’s success.
Carl has worked with many energy companies during his extensive career, including Electrocorp, Powermark, Areva, GEC Alstrom, Alstom, Transfield Services, Broad Spectrum, Siemens United Networks and Northpower.
WELLINGTON TROLLEY BUS NETWORK
Carl was project manager for the decommissioning of substations that served the Wellington overhead trolley bus network. The overhead network was completely removed by June 2018 and the first substation was removed that November. The project involves 17 sites in total and work is due for completion by August 2019.
TUAI IN THE WAIKAREMOANA
Remote sites have their own challenges. You can’t afford to forget anything. When you’re two hours away from the nearest rental shop, you need to be highly organised and well planned. This project is currently underway and the work pack is being developed. Decommissioning these four transformers will take a solid week for a team of four to five people.
